What to check before comparing racks

A roof rack and a deck-lid rack use different parts of the car. Begin by confirming the Volkswagen model, body configuration, rain-gutter or deck-lid arrangement, and any repair or modification around the proposed mounting area. A product name alone is not enough to establish fitment.

Inspect the attachment area for corrosion, filler, distorted metal, loose hardware, thick paint, or missing trim. Compare published dimensions with measurements taken from the actual car. Ask which mounting parts and protective pads are included, whether assembly is required, and whether fitting will affect access, lights, ventilation, or moving components.

Plan what the rack will carry before ordering. Use only documented rack and vehicle limits, choose restraints suitable for the luggage and mounting arrangement, and keep loads stable and clear of painted, hot, or moving parts. A vintage appearance does not prove that an arrangement is safely secured.
